Alpha-GPC (L-alpha-glycerylphosphorylcholine, also called choline alfoscerate) is a choline compound: a molecule the body uses as a building block for acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter, and for cell-membrane phospholipids. What are Alpha-GPC side effects?
Trials most often report headache, insomnia, and digestive upset, and tolerability in the large clinical trials was generally described as good. Two very large Korean cohort studies reached different conclusions on long-term safety: a 2021 study associated use with higher stroke risk, and a 2025 study in over 500,000 patients found lower dementia conversion and did not reproduce the harm signal in key groups. How much Alpha-GPC per day do studies use?
The dementia-era clinical trials typically used 1,200 mg per day in divided doses. Athletic studies commonly used around 600 mg taken before exercise. Market capsules commonly come in 300 to 600 mg. Alpha-GPC vs citicoline (CDP-choline): what is the difference?
Both are choline compounds studied for cognition, but they are different molecules with different research bases.
