Pinnell et al. Third, even in formulations where trace amounts of niacinamide might convert to nicotinic acid (a process that can happen slowly in low-pH environments), the quantity is pharmacologically insignificant.

Niacinamide and GHK-Cu work well together in the same routine. Both operate at pH 5 to 7 with no conflict. Apply niacinamide first, then GHK-Cu, then moisturizer. Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) and GHK-Cu should be kept in separate routines: the low pH of L-ascorbic acid can destabilize the copper-peptide bond, and free copper ions accelerate vitamin C oxidation. Ascorbyl glucoside is the most broadly compatible: it is highly stable in aqueous solution, converts to ascorbic acid after skin absorption, works at a skin-compatible pH of 5 to 7 (meaning it can be layered with niacinamide and GHK-Cu without pH conflict), and is well-tolerated on oily and sensitive skin types. Sodium ascorbyl phosphate is similarly stable and also has documented activity against acne-causing bacteria, making it a strong option for acne-prone skin specifically. Ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate is the best choice for dry or mature skin and oil-based formulation systems.
Neither is universally better: they target different concerns. Niacinamide is the stronger choice for oily, acne-prone, or post-shave skin. It controls sebum, strengthens the barrier, and has virtually no irritation risk. Vitamin C is the better option when visible sun damage, dark spots, or dullness are the main concern. For most people, starting with niacinamide and adding vitamin C after 2 to 4 weeks gives the best outcome from both.
