It is a beginner ramp-up schedule designed to minimize irritation. Week one: apply once. Week two: apply twice. Week three: apply three times. Each subsequent week you add one application until you reach your target frequency (usually nightly). The logic is that your skin's retinization process, adjusting cell turnover and barrier tolerance, takes several weeks. The gradual increase gives it time to adapt without triggering the redness and peeling that come from jumping straight to daily use.
