Androstadienone has shown some effects in controlled experiments: a 2004 PET imaging study found it activated brain regions associated with social cognition rather than primary olfactory processing,11 and a 2016 double-blind study found it enhanced perceived attractiveness of emotionally relevant stimuli, though not in a strictly sex-specific way.12 A 2023 population study of older adults found that greater sensitivity to androstadienone correlated with more frequent social engagement and sexual activity.13b

But a 2025 review in Physiology and Behavior assessed the full literature and concluded that current evidence does not sufficiently support classifying AND as a true human pheromone, citing methodological inconsistencies across studies including varying concentrations, delivery methods, and control conditions.10 A separate fMRI study found no consistent sex differences or reliable attentional modulation by AND in its paradigm.15
