The earliest is a 1991 report that peptide copper complexes had hair follicle-stimulating properties in C3H mice, which is an animal study and the root of much of the excitement. In 2016, a randomized trial in 45 men with pattern hair loss tested a complex of 5-aminolevulinic acid and GHK peptide applied once daily for six months, and hair count rose more than placebo (52.6 and 71.5 in the two active groups versus 9.6 in placebo, both active results reaching significance). That is a genuine human trial, but note two things: it used copper-free GHK, not GHK-Cu, and it combined the peptide with another active, so it cannot tell you what a copper peptide does on its own.
The largest hair number comes from a 2018 open-label study of 1000 patients given a formulation containing copper tripeptide-1 plus five growth factors, delivered as eight scalp injections, where 83% showed reduced hair fall on pull testing and total hair count was higher at one year. It is a big study, but it has no control group, it is a multi-ingredient formula, and it is injected into the skin by a clinician rather than applied as a serum. A 2020 companion study of similar injected formulas in mice was animal work. The fifth entry, a 2024 open-label study, tested a two-step regimen of a hydroxy acid scrub plus a serum containing copper tripeptide-1 and four other actives, and reported improved scalp flaking, hydration and hair density in adults with mild to moderate dandruff, again uncontrolled and multi-ingredient, in a scalp-condition context rather than pattern hair loss.

Read the table top to bottom and the pattern is unmistakable: every human hair study is either uncontrolled, injected, or built on a mix of ingredients, and the one randomized trial did not even use GHK-Cu. There is also a delivery caveat worth naming. A 2025 methodological review of topical GHK reported a surprising absence of clinical studies on GHK-Cu (review evidence), and a laboratory permeation study found that almost none of the peptide crossed intact human skin without a microneedle assist (ex vivo evidence).
