Copper Peptide Serum vs Cream, Lotion or Shampoo: What Actually Changes With Format
Format changes two things: how long the copper peptide sits on skin, and how much of it the label admits to. Leave-on serums stay put and are the aqueous vehicle most published GHK-Cu work reflects. Creams and lotions also stay on. Rinse-off shampoo, by definition, gets seconds of contact.
If you searched "copper peptide cream," you were probably choosing a texture. Texture is the least interesting part of that decision. Format decides contact time, what else is in the bottle taking up room, and in practice whether you ever learn how much GHK-Cu you bought. Three levers separate one copper peptide format from another.
1. Contact time. A leave-on product sits on skin until you cleanse, which is hours. A rinse-off product sits on skin for the length of a wash, then leaves with the water. That is not a knock on any shampoo; it is what rinse-off means. Short contact time is built into the format by definition.
2. The vehicle. GHK-Cu is water soluble, and water soluble actives are typically formulated in aqueous leave-on products. A serum is the usual vehicle for that: mostly water, the active, a short supporting cast. A cream or lotion is an emulsion, so it also carries oils, emulsifiers and thickeners. Richer texture is a real benefit on dry skin. It also means the peptide is one passenger among more of them.
3. The disclosed dose. Our GHK-Cu concentration by brand table checked the 16 most-searched copper peptide serums, and only 8 publish an exact GHK-Cu percentage. Disclosed doses run from 0.10% to 3%. If serums, the most spec-conscious format here, name a number about half the time, read a silent label anywhere as an unknown rather than an implied number.
No published trial compares copper peptide formats head to head. Nothing here is a trial result about format: it is mechanistic reasoning from three checkable things, how long the product stays on, what else is in the formula, and whether the concentration is disclosed.

Leave-on serum: the format the literature reflects
A serum is the plainest answer to a water soluble active: dissolve it in water, keep it stable, leave it on. Contact time is hours, with no rinse step and no thick emulsion competing for room in the formula.
It is also how GHK-Cu is usually applied in the published work. The most cited experiment in the category, Maquart 1988, raised collagen synthesis in fibroblast culture with GHK-Cu: cells in a dish, in vitro, not skin on a face. So the honest version of "serums are the format the research reflects" is narrow: that literature studies GHK-Cu as an aqueous leave-on application, and a serum is that. It is not proof that a serum outperforms an emulsion on your skin.

Leave-on cream or lotion: comfort, plus a silence
Creams and lotions are emulsions: a water phase, an oil phase, and the emulsifiers and thickeners holding them together. That structure earns its place. Emollients and occlusives slow water loss from the surface, which supports the appearance of smoother, less tight-looking skin before any peptide is involved, and comfort is what keeps people consistent.
Contact time is not the trade-off: a leave-on cream stays on exactly as long as a leave-on serum. The trade-off is room and silence. In a richer emulsion the peptide shares the formula with everything the texture requires, so a cream can carry the same amount of active as a serum, more, or less, and the format alone does not tell you which. Emulsion labels also state an exact peptide percentage far less often, and "not disclosed" is different from low and different from high. A cream with a printed number is more informative than a serum without one: format is a tendency, not a verdict.
Body lotion adds one wrinkle. You cover a much larger area than with a face serum, so price per gram of disclosed active becomes the number that matters.
The practical routine is not serum versus cream. It is both: the water based serum first, where the disclosed dose lives, then a cream or lotion over it for comfort. Routine order is the most asked question in the community data, so settle it before day one rather than during week three.
Eye cream: a cream in a smaller tube
Eye creams exist for real reasons: thinner and more mobile skin, more caution about fragrance, and fewer actives in a sensitive zone.
Structurally, though, an eye cream is a cream. Same hours of contact time, same emulsion overhead, usually fewer actives, almost never a published peptide percentage, and often a higher price per millilitre because the pack is small. The simpler alternative many people use: take your existing leave-on serum up to the orbital bone, then follow with the moisturizer you already own, which keeps one known concentration in the routine instead of two unknowns. Either way, patch test first, keep every product out of the eyes themselves, and stop if the area gets irritated. Rinse-off shampoo and the scalp question
Hair is a big share of this conversation: in our copper peptide community report, 19.3% of 357 analyzed public Reddit posts mention hair or scalp. Shampoo searches are not a fringe case.
The structural point is simple, and not a criticism of anyone's product. A shampoo is rinse-off, so contact time is the length of one wash before the formula leaves with the water. Surfactants exist to lift material off the scalp and carry it away, which is exactly what you want from a cleanser and the opposite of what a leave-on active needs. Every ingredient in a wash inherits that constraint.
One correction hair threads need: the follicle-cell experiment people quote, Pyo 2007, used AHK-Cu on hair follicle cells in vitro. The number the label usually leaves out
Across the 16 most-searched copper peptide serums we checked, only 8 publish an exact GHK-Cu percentage, and the disclosed figures span 0.10% to 3%: a thirtyfold gap between the lowest and highest published dose in one category, on shelves at the same time.
Now apply that to format. Serums disclose most often, creams, lotions and eye creams less often, shampoos almost never. The further you move from a plain aqueous leave-on product, the less likely anyone is to tell you the number. Three rules survive any format:
- Read silence as silence. No published percentage means not disclosed, which is neither evidence of a small dose nor of a generous one.
- Compare disclosed to disclosed. A printed number can be compared; a missing one can only be guessed at, whatever the texture.
- Convert before you judge. Percentages and ppm describe the same thing, so put both candidates on one scale first.
How to choose your format

- Eye area: your existing leave-on product taken carefully to the orbital bone, with one known concentration instead of two unknowns.
- Scalp focus: a leave-on scalp application rather than the wash, because contact time is the point. Enjoy a copper peptide shampoo as a shampoo, but do not expect a rinse-off step to carry the routine.
- Progressing hair loss, or a skin condition: a professional first. Cosmetics are the wrong category for that question.
