When that transfer happens excessively or unevenly, you get the visible dark spots and patches we call hyperpigmentation.
Most brightening ingredients work at the melanin production stage: tyrosinase inhibitors (kojic acid, arbutin, vitamin C, hydroquinone) block the enzyme that synthesizes melanin. Niacinamide works differently. 04Types of hyperpigmentation it addresses

Melasma

Niacinamide vs vitamin C

Niacinamide is more stable across formulations, tolerates a wider pH range, and causes essentially no irritation. Niacinamide vs alpha-arbutin
Alpha-arbutin is a reversible tyrosinase inhibitor shown in some in-vitro studies to inhibit the enzyme more potently than beta-arbutin. It addresses melanin synthesis; niacinamide addresses transfer. Both are well-tolerated without the rebound risk of hydroquinone. Niacinamide vs tranexamic acid

What about hydroquinone?
Hydroquinone at 4% remains the reference standard for depigmentation in clinical settings, but it comes with real trade-offs: it is not FDA-approved OTC, banned or restricted in the EU, Australia, and Japan, and carries documented risks of contact dermatitis, rebounding hyperpigmentation, and paradoxical ochronosis with long-term use.[12] A 2019 comparative study in JID found thiamidol, a newer tyrosinase inhibitor, outperformed hydroquinone in modified MASI scores for melasma with better tolerability. 07Where niacinamide goes in your routine
Niacinamide is water-soluble and works at a pH of 5 to 7, which makes it compatible with nearly every other product in a routine. The main sequencing considerations:
- Step order: Apply after cleansing and any acid toners (let the acid step neutralize first, about 20 to 30 seconds), before moisturizer and SPF. Its small molecular size means it absorbs well before you seal the skin with emollient layers.

08A note on skin tone and safety
Hyperpigmentation is more common, more persistent, and more psychologically impactful in darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick phototypes III to VI). Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation sits deeper in the dermis in melanin-rich skin, takes longer to fade, and responds poorly to aggressive interventions that cause additional inflammation, which just creates more PIH.
